A Dynamic Beach Pre-wedding Shoot
I recently headed to Piha beach in New Zealand, for a beach pre-wedding shot with the lovely Seth and Ewa. As a UK and destination wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of photographing weddings all around the world (see a recent chateau wedding I did in Toulouse, here), but it’s always special to photograph couples back in New Zealand, where I grew up. And what better place to do it than at the dynamic, black sand beach of Piha!
Piha Beach in New Zealand
Having originally grown up in New Zealand (read more on how I came to be a South West wedding photographer in Devon here), Piha has always been one of my most favourite places to visit. Just 45 minutes from Auckland city, the crashing waves and dynamic coastline of the West Coast black sand beaches like Piha are truly breath-taking. Plus, they gets the most glorious sunsets. So, I was pretty excited when Seth & Ewa agreed to meet me at Piha for their engagement shoot.

As a documentary wedding photographer, I look to connect the background with the image in its entirety. It’s for this that I love an eye-catching backdrop like Piha. Whether it’s on West Coast beaches in New Zealand or the sweeping Jurassic coast of Devon, natural and dynamic surroundings are some of my favourite places to photograph. Destination Wedding Photography
I try to travel back to New Zealand for the summer wedding season each year (as fun as the cold and rainy months of February are in the UK!). As a destination wedding photographer, nothing makes me happier than being able to explore new places and to meet new people, so the ability to shoot weddings alongside visiting my friends and family, is pretty special. It’s for this that I’m so excited to be capturing Ewa & Seth’s New Zealand wedding in December 2024 – judging by how fun they were in this beach engagement shoot, I think it’s going to be a pretty good day!

Piha Beach Pre-wedding shoot
That’s it for my real wedding feature of Ewa & Seth’s beach pre-wedding shoot at Piha beach in New Zealand, but I’ve got plenty more real wedding features on the blog if you’re interested – see Annie & Stu’s seaside celebrations in Devon here, for some more coastal inspiration. A few words on
Getting married in Devon
Although I grew up in New Zealand, I’ve been travelling over to see my close family in Devon for much of my life and so have always had a bit of a foot in both countries. Admittedly, my opinion may be slightly skewed because I love a country house wedding venue and Devon is full of these (Pynes House and Huntsham Court are some of my all-time favourites to mention a few), but the allure of Devon also lies in its beautiful landscapes.
From its sweeping hills to the dramatic red rock Jurassic coast, there’s always been something pretty special about this part of the world. Along both the North and South Coasts, Devon also has some unique coastal wedding venues – The Grain Store near Torquay in Kingsbridge is one of my favourites and I recently did an incredible Devon summertime wedding there, where the ceremony took place right by the sea. For those who love the idea of a celebration in a national park, a Dartmoor wedding amongst its expansive moorlands and untouched forests can be absolutely beautiful too. Plus, you’ve got Cornwall just next door if you wanted to extend your travels slightly while you’re in this part of the country. All in all, I know I may be biased as a wedding photographer Devon, but Devon has definitely got quite a bit to offer when it comes to getting married in the UK.
